| Dr Sharad P Paul
Dr Sharad P Paul completed three years of general surgery and two years of plastic surgical training between 1990 and 1995. His surgical training included work at Hutt and Middlemore Hospitals in NZ, and overseas. His major clinical interests are in the areas of sun damage, skin repair, wound healing, management of skin cancers and facial reconstruction following removal of skin cancers. He has a strong commitment to teaching and is a Course Convenor at the Surgical Skills Training Centre, and Senior Lecturer (hon) in Surgery at the University of Auckland. He is a visiting Senior Lecturer in the Skin Cancer Dept. of the University of Queensland - School of Medicine, and an international advisor. A new technique of skin grafting he has devised was published in Dermatologic Surgery in Jan 2010 (downloadable article below). He presented the new technique at the Nordic Plastic Surgical Conference in June 2010, The University of Queensland Alumni conference July 2010 and the Hong Kong International Forum on Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic medicine in Jan 2012. It has been hailed as the first new skin grafting technique in over a century.
 Dr Sharad P Paul was instrumental in developing the Waitemata Health Skin Lesion service, based at North Shore Hospital and from 1999-2009 held operating rights at North Shore and Waitakere Hospitals. He resigned his hospital surgical appointment in late 2009. He is the Chair of the Skin Cancer College of New Zealand and a Member of the International Dermoscopic Society.In 2001, Dr Sharad P Paul was requested by the Ministry of Health to draft the New Zealand Guidelines for Skin Lesion Management. These guidelines were ratified by the Dermatology and Plastic surgical working parties and form the basis of the current New Zealand National Guidelines (see downloadable document at bottom of this page) for Skin Lesion Management. In 2002, he was awarded a “Waitemata Clinical Achievement Award” for “outstanding clinical achievement”. In 2003, due to excellent innovative work by the Skin Surgery Clinic, he was “Highly Commended “ by the Ministry of Health during the NZ Government, Ministry of Health – and was awarded a Health Innovation Award . In October 2005, he was a finalist and presented at the ‘Innovations 2005- Waitemata district health board district ’ Celebration and launch at the Waitakere Trusts Stadium.
The Skin Surgery Clinic has been an affiliated surgical services provider to Waitemata health since 2000, and since 2003, has been an affiliated provider to Southern Cross Healthcare, New Zealand’s major health care insurance company; our services are also covered by all major insurance companies.
Outside clinical medicine, Dr Sharad Paul holds a Masters in Medical Law and Ethics and writes poetry and short stories, some of which have been published. He is also an international writer of literary fiction and his novels ‘COOL CUT’ has been released by PICADOR U.K in Sept 2007 and 'TO KILL A SNOW DRAGONFLY' has been released by Fourth Estate in Dec 2011. We believe that such an interest in arts and ethics makes for a better physician who provides holistic care. He is also a trustee of the Centre for Compassion in healthcare, an organization dedicated to putting 'care' back in the health industry.
